John F. Mealey Scholarship Fund
A College Scholarship Program
In 2002, the Board of Directors and Employees of the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition (CVHC) established the JFM College Scholarship Fund Program, in honor of CVHC’s founding and current Executive Director, John F. Mealey. The scholarship fund awards scholarships annually to students who reside in affordable housing communities developed by CVHC, who are pursuing undergraduate higher education at any accredited college, university or vocational school. To date, over half a million in scholarship funds have been awarded, benefiting more than 600 students.
In 2013, CVHC added the Father Edward Donovan Memorial Scholarship to its JFM College Scholarship Fund in honor of the late Father Donovan who helped found CVHC. This scholarship awards one undergraduate student a $2,000-dollar scholarship and an opportunity to undertake a paid summer internship with CVHC. Award selection is based on the student’s demonstrated leadership qualities, commitment to community service, and come from a farmworker household.
The Sandy Rosenblith Scholarship Award is an arm of the JFM College Scholarship Fund Program created in 2015 to support one graduate-level student with a $1,000-dollar scholarship. Sandy Rosenblith was a friend of the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition who left her mark over the years by supporting the organization’s rural development endeavors when she served as founding Executive Director of Rural LISC. Ms. Rosenblith held a Law degree from Harvard University and a baccalaureate degree from the University of California, Berkeley—testaments of her commitment to higher education. Through this scholarship arm, CVHC is fondly memorializing her lifetime achievements to the field of community development.
